FCCLA "End Period Poverty" Project

This year the Irene-Wakonda FCCLA has decided to make baskets with period products in them to place in community restrooms. Members decided upon this project because they saw a need in the community for feminine hygiene products. We plan to make 20 baskets with donations made by the community. After the baskets have been assembled by members they will be placed in womens restrooms around the area to be used when you're in a pinch.

In a 2021 national survey of college students, researchers at George Mason University and the University of Pennsylvania found that 10% of all female college students are unable to afford menstrual products each month, leading to skipped classes and greater self-reported rates of moderate or severe depression.

We do not want any woman to feel ashamed because they cannot afford menstrual products.  Our hope is to supply women the products they need when they need them.   Lydian Mews, Katelyn Tallman and Natalie Girard are in charge of this community service project and presenting at the state FCCLA meeting this coming April.

Don't forget we are accepting donations for the baskets until February 3rd. If you would like to donate, leave the products at the high school office or with an FCCLA member. Thank you.
